You might be surprised to learn that many MBA graduates from top MBA colleges in India don't always have a good work-life balance. In fact, early in their career, they might have a tendency to put too much emphasis on work at the expense of their health and family life. It wasn't until later that MBA graduates realizes that having a healthy balance between work and personal time was essential for happiness and success. Luckily, there are some simple strategies you can employ after your MBA application to maintain your sanity.

As you might have seen in our series on the MBA experience, business schools are pretty consuming. There is no such thing as work-life balance—you will have to make sacrifices and be more organized than you are used to.

Here are ways for you to achieve a healthy balance.

  1. Learn to prioritize your time during sessions and your job after your MBA.

There’s nothing wrong with taking some time off from studying MBA if you need it. Just make sure that the break doesn’t turn into an extended period of procrastination! The simple truth is that there's no perfect work-life balance in the MBA profession.

It simply doesn't exist. You might be able to get close, but it will always be a struggle until you have it figured out as per your personality.

What people think of as “work-life balance” after MBA is that it typically involves zeroing in on two specific areas:

A) Your personal life and

B) Your career.

And while these two things are certainly intertwined and inseparable from one another, they're also very different from each other in many ways. So much so that we can't lump them together under some blanket term like “work-life balance” without compromising both sides of the equation.

  1. Be clear about what's worth your time.

Before you can even try to balance your life after your MBA degree, you need to figure out what's most important to you. If it's not clear what matters most, then it will be difficult for you to make decisions about where and when and how much of yourself should be devoted to each activity.

The first step in achieving work-life balance is knowing what your priorities are or rather, knowing why those priorities like family matter so much.

  1. Know yourself, so you can work within your strengths and limitations after your MBA.

In order to achieve work-life balance after MBA, you must know your strengths and limitations. For example, if your best work is done early in the morning, then make sure that you set aside time for it when you're most productive. If you need quiet space to focus on tasks that require concentration, then find ways of achieving this (for example, working from home).

You also need to know what goals are important for you at any given point in time. If a project isn't aligned with these goals or deadlines aren't met due to other commitments outside of work life (such as family obligations), then consider whether it's worth continuing that particular project or not. Because otherwise, it may affect other areas of your life negatively over time (which could lead up into burnout).

  1. If you're not at your best first thing in the morning, don't try to cram too much in.

If you're not a morning person, don't try to force yourself to be one. Instead, let your body tell you when it's ready for activity. It may take some trial and error to find out what works best for you. But if you start your day with a healthy breakfast after plenty of sleep, chances are good that you'll feel energized enough to enjoy the rest of your morning routine.

Make sure that there are opportunities throughout each day where you can step back from your laptop or phone and give yourself a break from distractions. Whether this means taking some time for physical exercise like yoga or going for a walk in nature; meditating; reading; listening to music, etc. Doing something creative like painting or playing an instrument and making sure that these activities fit into your schedule will help keep things balanced!

  1. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, and limit your stimulants.

You should be getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night. It's important for your body to recover from the stresses of the day, and if you're not getting enough sleep, your productivity will suffer.

If you want to make sure that your sleep schedule is consistent and effective, make sure that any stimulants (coffee, soda) are limited to the afternoon hours. This way they'll wear off before bedtime and won't interfere with proper rest.

Work-life balance is different for everyone. It's important to know yourself, and what you need in order to be productive. If you're not getting enough sleep, or if you're too stressed, it will affect your performance at work - so take the time to recharge!
